My Lived Recovery Experience
Having a knowledgeable therapist is key, but it's like sprinkles on the cake when your therapist *gets it* because they have been through similar challenges you are facing. I share pieces of my recovery when I feel called to, so that you know you are not alone and healing is possible.
The following are some of the life challenges I have overcome throughout my life:
-
I was bullied as a teenager and often ate my lunch in a bathroom stall. I learned early on in life I'm not that special.
-
I became morbidly obese, developed pre-diabetes, then reversed it before I turned 20. This sparked my passion for wellness!
-
I failed out of college and lived in my car before going on to get my Master's. Rock bottom really was a blessing : )
-
I lost over 100 pounds on my own and never gained all my weight back, even though my Health Psychology professor told me statistically I would.
-
I've overcome depressive episodes, severe anxiety and an eating disorder all while getting my undergraduate degree. So, my transcript used to look like the whole Alphabet every semester. I'm still here, though.
-
I fell in love with someone with a heroin addiction and I got a crash course in how devastating drugs are but how beautiful recovery is.
-
I watched my mom almost die and then make a miracle recovery. My eyes were opened to the fact that death is coming for all of us, but no one will ever leave before their time.
-
I was in a relationship with someone who suddenly died at age 33. I see each day as a precious gift, and I know each time I see someone could be my last.
-
I have gone over 9 years without cigarettes and over 4 years without alcohol. Cuz life just feels better sober.
